The State of Illinois determined that the Department of Agriculture Administration building at the State Fairgrounds in Springfield was in need of a roof replacement. It was desired that the new roof system design would incorporate sustainable design – namely, reflective (“cool roof”) and vegetative (“green roof”) components. The project also included coordination of mechanical work necessary to remove an outdated solar heating system. The new roof system retained the existing lightweight concrete topping (for slope-to-drain), added new insulation for energy efficiency, and featured a white, fully-adhered TPO single-ply roof membrane. A central roof area was overlaid with pre-planted vegetative trays and concrete paver walkways; existing skylights in this area were also replaced. The design also included a viewing platform where building occupants and the public could access and enjoy the rooftop landscape.
