MKE Mitchell International Airport
Owner: MMIA / Milwaukee County
Location: Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Lead Consultant: Ben Ringle, AIA
STR-SEG Design Team: Randy Marquardt
Project Budget: $2,200,000
Details of Project Successes/Challenges:
The project replaced the early-1980’s vintage roof system on the Main Terminal building of the Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The project also addressed building envelope deficiencies that had caused intermittent leaks throughout its lifespan. In conjunction with skylight and curtainwall replacements, a consistent clerestory sill line was established to simplify and improve flashing terminations.
The design updated building envelope systems in terms of thermal resistance, added air and vapor barriers, as well as addressing roof access, protection and fall protection requirements.
The structural system (space-frame) presented a challenge for roof system options, as was the interior safety measures for work occurring over an operating public space.
